The Brecon Beacons National Park has sweeping mountains, lush green open-lands and moor land interlaced with its unique history, geology, flora and fauna. There are forests, some lush river valleys and to the south at Ystradfellte spectacular waterfalls over the limestone landscape, wooded gorges and some of the best, and deepest caves in Britain. The scenic beauty of the lakes and rivers offer walks in the river valleys of the Usk and the Wye. |
| The water aspects of the area are many and include the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal with its tranquil charm as well as many lakes nestling in the valleys. The towns and villages are scattered and each with its own character and histories. Brecon, where the cathedral dominates the town, Hay-on Wye with its special interest to the book world offers a town piled with book shops where almost any subject or second hand book is available. |

Crickhowell is only one of the castle towns shelters beneath the limestone peak of Pen
Cerrig Calch ( or the chalk rock ) Other more ruined castles are at Trecastle, Bronllys
Tretower and Morlais, even older are the rings of standing stones interlaced into the
landscape and revealing the Celtic influence on this land of water, mountains, forests,
reservoirs, fields, and with its quite villages and towns. The effects and remains of the influence of the industrial revolution and its impact on the countryside, from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century, are present in parts of the National Park. These activities, coal mining, iron work and industry needed to be served by track, canals and roads that still survive and now all enhance the interest aspects of this historical and magnificent 500 square mile Park of Wales. |
